Ultimate Thanksgiving & Christmas

Oh, Thanksgiving….

You are the holiday that leaves us bloated on the couch, top button undone on our jeans, in a semi-conscious food coma every year.

Does it FEEL like you gained 10 pounds since the Thanksgiving weekend though?

Now that we left Thanksgiving and Christmas behind, countdown mode to a New Year is in full affect and we all know the countdown comes with parties…many of them.

There’s nothing wrong with a little overindulgence here and there, however, I know Thanksgiving often triggers unhealthy eating habits that continue all winter long.

After overindulge in sugar, alcohol or junk food day or a weekend I personally spend a day to go on a cleanse mode and include very specific detoxifying foods on my routine to get my body back on track.

Here is my simple formula for a ONE DAY DETOX….

Step 1:

Citrus fruits, especially lemon, are well known for their ability to flush toxins from your body, as well as their numerous antioxidant benefits. Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties as well as aiding in digestion and helping the body naturally detoxify.

Apple Cider Vinegar is naturally detoxifying and contains malic acid, which gives it anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. So, how about mixing all of them to have a kick ass tea to get rid of all the toxins?

  • 5 Fresh Ginger Slices
  • 2 Thin Slices of Lemon
  • 3-4 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar. (1 Tablespoon per cup of liquid is a good rule of thumb)
  • Honey to Taste

Boil a large pot of hot water. Pour into a thermos or fill a large mug.

Add all the ingredients. Put this into a thermos and drink it throughout the day.

Step 2:

Focus your first meal of the day on 2 foods that are well known detoxifiers: Dark greens and garlic.

  • Dark leafy greens have an abundance of phytonutrients and their fiber speeds up digestion.
  • Garlic contains a highly beneficial compound called allicin, which has potent antiviral, antibacterial and anti cancer properties.
  • You can lightly sautee some kale or dandelion greens and garlic with a little olive oil, and have it with your eggs for breakfast. Yum…

Step 3:

For detox purposes, go super simple with what you put into the green smoothie, including organic fruits and veggies, and detoxifying greens like kale or dandelion greens, water.

Here are two green smoothies on a detox day.

Detox Green Smoothie Recipe -1

  • 1 apple
  • 4 strawberries
  • 2-3 cups dandelion greens and/or kale and/or spinach
  • ½ banana (optional)
  • 1 cup coconut water (more as needed -water is ok if you don’t have it)
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger, to taste

Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth.

Detox Green Smoothie Recipe-2

Beets and beet greens are powerful detoxifiers. They team up with the liver to flush out the toxins. But that’s not all! Citrus also works to detoxify the body naturally.

  • 1 small raw beet, peeled and diced
  • 1 cups beet greens or chard
  • 1 cup coconut water (more as needed -water is ok if you don’t have it)
  • 1 oranges, peeled
  • Juice of ½ lemon

  1. Blend beet greens, water, and oranges until smooth.
  2. Add beet, and blend until smooth. Enjoy!

Step 4:

Focus the rest of your meals on simple foods.

Have a big bowl of mixed greens, add lean protein, like chicken or turkey breast, (organic, free-range preferred) or wild-caught fish. Add 1 table spoon balsamic vinegar or olive oil.

If you feel hungry you can also add clean carbs like quinoa, brown rice, yams or sweet potatoes (broiled, steamed or baked). Limit the portions to ¼ to ½ cup with lunch only.

You should also have lean protein and green vegetables like green beans or brussel sprouts on your dinner. Top your protein with a simple medley of fresh herbs like basil and garlic or hot sauce to give an extra kick.

Step 5:

The only beverages you should include on your detox day are the ginger-lemon tea, and lots of water. Give your body a break from caffeine and sugary drinks.

That’s it! Simple and easy – don’t beat yourself up for enjoying special occasions – just get back to your daily plan and give your body a little extra support with these easy to follow steps.

Your Follow-Up Plan

A detox should be followed up with whole food eating.

A lot of the cleanses on the market are a strategy to sell supplements to people who haven’t had the opportunity to learn how to eat nutrient-dense and balanced meals.

So if you KNOW what nutrients to put in your body, your body regulates your fat storage, eliminating excess and gives you steady, long-lasting energy to fuel your workouts.

These kind of eating habits support the production of the lean, sleek muscle that you want to carry – it will not bulk you up, it will simply define and sculpt the shape of your body, and burn more calories at rest.

If you want a more structured approach to putting this together with meal plans and daily menus, grocery lists and recipes to use, I suggest reading the about Fit Girls Food Guide and using the 30 Day Meal Plan it includes as a template to learning this stuff and making it a lifestyle.

For those of you who are tired of constantly eliminating food, worrying about how much you’re supposed to eat and wondering why you’re not seeing your waistline shrink, this is the most important information I can give you.

Enjoy your holiday season!
